Family-school-community partnerships may take the form of school based action teams that are focused on: supporting students to high levels of achievement; working on school improvement plans; resolving a specific issue such as reducing illegal drug use; eliminating violence in homes, at school and in the community; or bringing people together to construct an accessible playground.
The partnerships may be smaller in scope linking one community service to a school building (such as a counseling service or health clinic) or involve a stronger communication network among afterschool providers, school staff and families.
Research indicates that family engagement with student learning and the school is critical. It also identifies key roles for community organizations: businesses, nonprofits, civic groups, etc., as contributors to developing higher quality programs, bringing resources to the school community and to becoming champions for the education system. When families, school staff and community partners work together the best results are achieved.
